What is FSS, and why should I care?

Most of us know FSS as the one who puts on events. You might even hear them referred to as the "fun squadron."  But, FSS is so much more than that. I have been a military spouse for more than 12 years, and until recently, I didn't know what all the FSS entailed and why it pertained to me! I am here today to help debunk the mystery.

What is FSS?

The FSS, also known as the Force Support Squadron, provides a variety of services supporting airmen and their families in addition to retirees and DoD civilians. In-processing, professional military education, ID cards, dining facilities, and lodging are just some of the areas that help support airmen in completing their mission. But, that's not it! FSS also houses all of the MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) elements on base otherwise known as your quality of life programs. These can include golf, bowling, outdoor recreation, auto hobby shop, arts and crafts and more.

If you're looking for something fun to do while at Keesler Air Force Base, the 81st Force Support Squadron has you covered! A few of our facilities are:

  • Bay Breeze Golf Course
  • Gaude Lanes Bowling Center
  • Bay Breeze Event Center
  • Arts and Crafts Center
  • Auto Hobby Shop
  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Information, Tickets, and Travel (ITT)
  • Vandenberg and McBride Commons

We also are comprised of other mission-supporting elements such as the Airman and Family Readiness Center, fitness centers (Dragon, Blake, Triangle), lodging, military personnel flight and the youth center and CDC.We are your all-encompassing support while you are stationed here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Why Should I Care?

Well, we are here to support you and to help you let your hair down! We know how to have fun just as well as we know how to take care of people. Whether it be family counseling, a day on a boat in the Biloxi Back Bay, or a place to rest your head, FSS is there for you.

In addition to our day-to-day activities, we also offer several community events throughout the year. Our big base-wide events include Military Child Day, Crawfish Cook-off & Tasting, Tails 'N Ales (shrimp cook-off/beer tasting), Freedom Fest, Ghouls in the Park, and Christmas in the Park. But, we don't just offer large scale events. There are hundreds of specialized events throughout the year. Whether your interests include hiking, bowling, painting or gaming, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Here are 4 things to do if you aren't already:
